Following Arvind Kejriwal’s incarceration, commuters suffer as the AAP protests in Mohali

AAP protested against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s detention by the Enforcement Directorate today, causing traffic disruptions, loud sloganeering, a pickpocket scare, and water cannon sprays.

Protesters approached the location and chanted slogans against the Enforcement Directorate and the Center despite a strong police presence and barricading around it.

Since the afternoon, Gurdwara Amb Sahib’s traffic signals have required locals and commuters to make diversions.

“Near the protest site, the police have set up barriers and established detours. Sachin Kaura, who had traveled to Sector 62 for work, said that commuters are compelled to make diversions in order to get to their destinations. She added that this caused a little annoyance.

Throughout the demonstration, there were many statements warning the participants not to be pickpocketed. There were requests for people to return missing handbags and cell phones if they were discovered in the packed area. The demonstrators, who had traveled from far locations, were seen searching for a spot to park before making their way to the protest area.

Women workers began to draw attention from passersby with their aggressive sloganeering as the rally gathered pace.

Leading by Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Cheema, the demonstrators attempted to cross into Chandigarh to deliver a petition to the Punjab Governor at 2:00 pm, but were halted on the prison road, which runs parallel to the Chandigarh-Mohali border. When they attempted to mount the barriers, they were met with a strong police presence, anti-riot police, barricading, and water cannons.

MLAs and cabinet minister Gurmeet Meet Hayer spoke to the demonstrators as well. According to Punjab AAP General Secretary Harchand Singh Barsat, the party’s members would carry on their nonviolent demonstrations against the Central government in Chandigarh and Delhi. He said, “Water cannons and lathicharge cannot stop us.”
