High Court requests varsity’s position on the petition for JNUSU general secretary to be re-elected

On Friday, the Delhi High Court inquired about Jawaharlal Nehru University’s (JNU) position on a motion to re-elect the general secretary of the JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU).

In response to a request filed by United Left Alliance candidate Swati Singh, Justice Sachin Datta sent notices to JNU, its election committee, the grievance redressal cell, and elected general secretary Priyanshi Arya. Singh’s candidacy for the position was purportedly revoked by the authorities only hours before the March 22 elections.

The petitioner claimed that her ability to run for general secretary had been unilaterally revoked, against the logic of free and fair elections, despite the fact that her name had been published among the legitimate candidates for the position. Additionally, the petitioner claimed that since their name appeared on the ballot paper, voters’ rights were also impacted by the uncertainty that resulted.

The petitioner further claimed that the grievance redressal cell’s formation violated legal requirements and that the organization disregarded the suggestions made by the Lyngdoh Committee.
