India’s Murder Cases Show a Marginal Decline in 2022, Per NCRB Data

According to the most recent statistics given by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), there will be a slight decline in the number of murder cases in India in 2022. A total of 28,522 murder-related FIRs were filed, which is 76 homicides per day on average, compared to 29,272 in 2021.

‘Disputes’ accounted for the largest number of these crimes—9,962—and was followed by ‘personal revenge or animosity’ (3,761) and ‘gain’ (1,884).

Based on the statistics, it was found that 95.4% of murder victims were adults, and almost 70% of those victims were males. Nine people who identify as third gender and 8,125 women made up the victim population.

The number of murder cases in metropolitan areas increased by 3.9%, to 2,031 in 2022.

The charge sheeting rate in these instances was 81.5, and the crime rate per lakh population was 2.1.

The NCRB report states that Uttar Pradesh had the greatest number of FIRs (3,491), followed by Maharashtra (2,295), Madhya Pradesh (1,978), Rajasthan (1,834), and Bihar (2,930). When combined, these five states were responsible for 43.92 percent of all murder cases in the nation.

On the other hand, the states with the fewest murder cases in 2022 were Sikkim (9), Nagaland (21), Mizoram (31), Goa (44), and Manipur (47).

With 1550 murder incidents, Jharkhand had the highest murder rate per lakh population at four. Other states that did somewhat better were Uttar Pradesh (1.5), Bihar (2.3), Maharashtra (1.8), Madhya Pradesh (2.3), and Rajasthan (2.3). Arunachal Pradesh (3.6), Chhattisgarh, and Haryana (3.4) were next in line.

The Union Territories of Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir (99), Puducherry (30), Chandigarh (18), Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu (16), Andaman and Nicobar Islands (7), Ladakh (5), and Lakshadweep (0) had the most number of murder cases in 2022 among the Union Territories.

Bengaluru had 173 murder cases in 2022, followed by Mumbai with 135 crimes, Lucknow with 131 cases, Patna with 107 cases, and Chennai with 101 cases.
