Kerala Accepts 173 Novel Textbooks That Comply With The State Framework Rather Than NEP 2020

173 new textbooks for Classes 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 have received approval from the Kerala School Curriculum Steering Committee. Printing of these textbooks in accordance with the recently announced Curriculum Framework is scheduled for February, according to The Hindu. The textbooks are offered in Kannada, Tamil, English, and Malayalam.

almost a period of one and a half years, almost 900 educators worked on the curriculum overhaul. The minister said that the Malayalam alphabet would now be included in every book in the new curriculum at a news conference held in Thiruvananthapuram. He said that efforts were made to aggressively seek out feedback from kids and the panchayat level. He also emphasized the process’s popularity and openness, pointing out that the curriculum underwent a thorough and drawn-out modification.

The general education minister for Kerala, V Sivankutty, previously revealed that textbooks for Classes 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 would be available in 2025.

Kerala unveiled a new curriculum framework in October 2023 that was modeled after the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2023 but included a number of significant changes. Following a sixteen-year gap, the state revised the curriculum significantly in 2007, bringing it into compliance with the National Curriculum Framework. In 2013, further changes were made. But during the last ten years, the curriculum hasn’t changed.

While acknowledging the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the curriculum committee emphasizes that the state has given democratic dialogue first priority in creating the new curriculum framework.

The General Education Department claims in an official statement that “a popular and transparent approach was used to attempt curriculum modifications.” Rather than adhering to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020’s directives, the new framework was developed via democratic deliberations and took state legitimacy into account.

The agency also declared that the Preamble to the Constitution would be included in all textbook introductions for the first time in the state. The textbooks will also include pictures that highlight artwork that students from different courses have contributed.

According to the Kerala Education Department, important industries like tourism, agriculture, information technology, textiles, and skill development would be highlighted in the textbooks for Classes 5 through 10. The curriculum integrates important teachings on hygiene, civics, gender justice, and scientific temperament with the goal of instilling in pupils a vocational mentality.
