Learn Everything About Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya, From Nehru Memorial to Museum for All Prime Ministers

To commemorate 75 years of Indian independence, the renowned Nehru Memorial Museum and Library in Delhi’s Teen Murti Bhavan complex was renamed as the “Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library Society” on Friday. The new name was accepted at a special meeting by Rajnath Singh, the vice-president of the NMML Society and the minister of defense.

A completely independent organization, the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) is supported by the ministry of culture. Located within the Teen Murti Complex in Delhi, it is a renowned center for study on modern and current Indian history and culture.

It was a component of Edwin Lutyens’ imperial capital and was designed by Robert Tor Russell. The museum was opened by the then-president S Radhakrishnan on November 14, 1964, the 75th birthday of Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister.

The library was built after the museum in 1966 and officially opened in 1974. The museum and library were initially located in the western and eastern wings of the Teen Murti Bhavan, respectively, but due to the fast expansion of research materials, a new library building was built and opened by the president of the time, VV Giri, in 1974.

In 1989, an auxiliary building was completed to house more study materials. The Centre for Contemporary Studies was subsequently established within the structure in 1990.

The Nehru Memorial Museum and Society was created by the federal government on April 1, 1966, and it was registered as an organization under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. There are now 29 members of the society. Former prime minister Indira Gandhi opened the Nehru Planetarium on the grounds of the Teen Murti Bhavan on February 6, 1984.

The concept of establishing a museum honoring all of India’s prime leaders was first brought up by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2016. On November 11, 2016, the NMML executive council authorized the building of the Teen Murti complex’s Museum of All Prime Ministers.

After four years, the Prime Ministers’ Museum’s construction was finished in 2022, and on April 21 of that year, Prime Minister Modi officially opened the structure.

TEEN MURTI BHAVAN: HOW DID IT BECOME THE NEHRU MEMORIAL?

The British commander-in-chief in India’s previous official home was Teen Murti Bhavan. However, it became Nehru’s official house when India gained its independence in 1948, when the last commander-in-chief left; he remained there for 16 years until his death.

On November 14, 1964—the 75th anniversary of Nehru’s birth—Radhakrishnan donated the Teen Murti Bhavan to the country, transforming it into the Nehru Memorial Museum.

On August 9, 1968, the union cabinet determined that the building will once again house the prime ministers of India, according to NMML’s previous director Shakti Sinha. However, it did not occur, and it was decided that it would instead become a monument for Nehru.

LEGACY OF CONGRESS, FAMILY NEHRU-GANDHI

The Nehru Memorial Museum is one of the Nehru-Gandhi family’s most significant legacies, according to the grand old party Congress. The museum’s location, the Teen Murti Complex, displays Nehru’s time as prime minister. It promotes his principles and beliefs.

On April 1, 1966, Indira Gandhi opened the Nehru Planetarium and established the Nehru Memorial Museum and Society to oversee the facility. The NMML Society was chaired by former Congresswoman Sonia Gandhi when the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) was in power.

THE MUSEUM FOR ALL 14 PRIME MINISTERS FROM NEHRU TO MODI IS IN AMRIT KAAL.

The Teen Murti estate, in the government’s opinion, best represents a continuous narrative. It was constructed to recognize the efforts of all 14 Indian prime ministers since India’s independence. The structure serves as a narrative account of the contributions made by each prime minister throughout the course of the nation’s 75-year history. It illustrates the history of teamwork that led to the triumph of India’s democracy, including people from every social class and tier.

“Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya opens doors of knowledge, ideas, and experience for future generations,” remarked Modi during the museum’s opening. Every prime minister has made an effort to move the nation ahead while facing the hurdles. All of these are events from recent history. The younger generation and future generations will be inspired if they are aware of the prime ministers.
