No longer the Gujarati Governor Padmanabha Acharya

Here passing away Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya, a veteran leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party and a former governor of Nagaland. 92 years old.

Known by most as “PB,” he passed away at his Andheri West residence. This evening, his burial will take place at the adjacent Oshiwara Crematorium.

Acharya was born in Udupi (Karnataka) on October 8, 1931. He attended school and college there, then moved to Mumbai to get a law degree from the University of Mumbai. He then joined a company in Mumbai with one of his brothers.

Before joining the BJP in 1980, he held a number of positions in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh from his time as a student at Udupi.

After serving as the general secretary and national executive member of the BJP for the northeastern states, he was appointed president of Mumbai North-West and went on to undertake a number of community and social initiatives.

In addition to holding a number of other significant roles within the party, Acharya was named Nagaland’s governor in July 2014.

He also served as the governor of Assam, Tripura, Manipur, and Arunachal Pradesh for various lengths of time on several times.
