On September 11, a Maratha outfit calls a “Bandh” in Thane to protest police brutality in Jalna

A Maratha group in Thane, Maharashtra, has requested a “bandh” on September 11 in protest of the most recent police use of lethal force on demonstrators in Jalna. State opposition party leaders have banded together in favor of the “bandh,” demonstrating their allegiance to the Sambhaji Brigade-supported Sakal Maratha Morcha.

At a gathering on Saturday, important local figures asked the people of Thane to take part in the “bandh.” Suhas Desai, the head of the NCP’s city unit (Sharad Pawar faction), Pradeep Shinde, the Shiv Sena’s (UBT) counterpart, Ravindra More, Avinash Jadhav, the MNS’s city chief, Ramesh Ambre, the Maratha Kranti Morcha’s city chief, and the Congress party’s Vikrant Chavan all attended the meeting.

When the protest for Maratha community quota in Antarwali Sarathi village, Jalna district, got violent earlier this month, several people were hurt, including police officers. A portion of the enraged mob is said to have blocked the transport of a hunger-striker to the hospital as part of their protest for reservation, forcing the police to use lathi-charges and tear gas shells to calm the situation.

Maratha organizations have recently started planning rallies in several regions of the state in response to various demands.
