Pollution in the River Alaknanada: NGT Notifies the Jal Shakti Ministry

The Union Ministry of Jal Shakti has received a notice from the National Green Tribunal for adhering to its previous directive to submit an action-taken report regarding the contamination of the River Alaknanada in Uttarakhand.

The NGT was considering a plea that said muck was being poured into the river, polluting the water body, while Badrinath’s master plan was being carried out in Uttarakhand.

The Ministry of Jal Shakti (MoJS) was instructed by the NGT in a previous decision on May 29 of this year to submit its response and an action taken report within two months, according to a bench led by NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava.

In a recent ruling, the bench, which also included Justice Sudhir Agarwal, a judge, and A Senthil Vel, an expert, remarked that the union government had not responded.

The tribunal ordered that a new notice be addressed to the Secretary of the Ministry of Jal Shakti for compliance with the directive in the ruling from May 29.

The case was scheduled for further action on January 4.
