Read More About Newly Appointed RAW Chief and IPS Officer Ravi Sinha

Ravi Sinha, an officer of the Indian Police Services (IPS), has been chosen to lead the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), an organisation that provides foreign information.

Sinha is a Chhattisgarh Cadre officer from the 1988 batch. He will succeed Samant Goel, the current director of RAW, who will step down on June 30.

Goel was named RAW’s CEO in 2019 and was given two one-year extensions in 2021 and 2022. He is just the third RAW leader to have served for more than three years, according to the PTI.

Here, we define RAW, outline its mission, and discuss Sinha, the new RAW director.

How well do we know Ravi Sinha?
Ravi Sinha is an IPS officer from the Chhattisgarh Cadre, class of 1988.

The official title of the RAW leader in the Cabinet Secretariat is Secretary, Research and Analysis Wing (Secretar-R).

According to the PTI, Sinha’s nomination as Secretary, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), for a two-year term, has been accepted by the Cabinet’s Appointments Committee.

Sinha and a select group of other officials were thought to be among the front-runners to lead RAW.

The Print stated in 2017 that Sridhar Rao, SK Jaiswal, and Sinha were among the front-runners for the position of RAW director.

As of this now, Sinha is the Cabinet Secretariat’s Special Secretary. In RAW, this is the second position.

According to the PTI, Sinha is highly regarded in the intelligence establishment for his technical proficiency and for being an authority on India’s neighbours. He has worked for RAW for more than 20 years.

According to the NDTV, Sinha is a well-known tech-savvy cop.

“Ravi Sinha is credited with introducing contemporary technologies to the area of intelligence gathering in R&AW. “This would enable him to integrate technological and human intelligence dimensions to work together to address the challenges of our times,” according to government sources, according to NDTV.

The Left Wing Extremism (LWE)-affected regions of Jammu and Kashmir, the Northeast, and the vicinity are also known to be under Sinha’s firm control, according to the PTI, which he has severed at various periods in time. Maoist/Naxalite violence is technically referred to as the LWE.

RAW, the Indian foreign intelligence agency, what is it?
The external intelligence organisation for India is called the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW).

The requirement for a distinct organisation with a focus on foreign intelligence issues led to the founding of the RAW in 1968. The Intelligence Bureau (IB), which now focuses on internal intelligence, once dealt with exterior information as well.

The legal title of the RAW director in the Cabinet Secretariat is Secretary-R, and he or she answers to the Cabinet Secretariat, who in turn answers to the Prime Minister of India.

The Indian intelligence services, especially RAW, are very clandestine and lack legislative control, in contrast to other nations like the United States. With the exception of certain famous chiefs like RAW founder RN Kao or some well-known ones like Vikram Sood or AS Dulat, very little is known about the chiefs and they seldom ever appear in public.
