The mother’s name must appear first on all government documents: Maha Cabinet

On Monday, the Maharashtra government took a historic and progressive step by requiring the names of mothers to appear before the names of their children on official records. The Maharashtra cabinet approved this decision on Monday, and it will be reflected in state revenue and education records as of May 1, 2024.

The cabinet has authorized the obligatory recording of mothers’ names along with children born on or after May 1, 2024, under the direction of Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

It is necessary to put the child’s name first, then the mother’s, and lastly the father’s name and surname on all records related to education, income, employment, and service, as well as on application forms for different exams. Notably, there will be no more reference of the mother’s name alone.

The person who suggested this historic move, Aditi Tatkare, the Minister for Women and Child Welfare and Development and MLA for the National Congress Party (Ajit Pawar), expressed her happiness with the outcome. She gave gratitude to Deputy Chief Ministers and Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

Thank you to Ajit Pawar and Devendra Fadnavis for their unwavering support in the cabinet. Tatkare said that Maharashtra would be in the forefront of the country in enacting such innovative and forward-thinking policies, underscoring the fact that the new regulation will apply as of May 1, 2024.

The Public Health Department was given instructions by the cabinet to work with the Central Government to update the birth and death registrations as needed. Births and deaths will be documented with the mother’s name and surname appearing before the father’s name and surname after receipt of the central government decree.

Additionally, it was determined that married women would complete the registration procedure using their maiden name, surname, and husband’s name after that. In property records, women will also be able to use their maiden name. Orphans and other special instances pertaining to the registration of children’s birth and death certificates will be granted an exemption.
