The PM’s Major Announcement: Bharat Ratna For Two Past PMs, PV Narasimha Rao and Charan Singh

The nation’s highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna, was bestowed to former prime ministers PV Narasimha Rao, Chaudhary Charan Singh, and agricultural scientist Dr. MS Swaminathan on Friday by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

PM PV NARASIMHA RAO, PRIOR

When he unveiled the Bharat Ratna of former prime minister Narasimha Rao, PM Modi said that his vision and leadership were “important” in advancing “India’s economy and creating a strong basis for its prosperity and growth.”

“A new era of economic development was fostered by significant measures taken during Narasimha Rao Garu’s tenure as Prime Minister, which opened India to global markets,” he said.

Rao’s grandson, NV Subhash, told CNN-News18 after the news, “We are very honored that he got Bharat Ratna.”

Subhash conveyed his appreciation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for acknowledging the outstanding contributions of Narasimha Rao.

Subhash said, “I blame the Gandhi family and the UPA government for not giving Bharat Ratna to Narasimha Rao.” “Consistently insulting Narasimha Rao,” he charged Congress.

Former Prime Minister Chandrayan Singh

“It is the good fortune of our government that former Prime Minister of the country Chaudhary Charan Singh is being honored with Bharat Ratna,” PM Modi said on the microblogging platform X.

The honor is devoted to Charan Singh’s “incomparable contribution to the country,” according to the prime minister. The “rights and welfare of farmers” had been the former prime minister’s lifelong passion.

“He constantly contributed energy to nation development, whether he was the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, the nation’s Home Minister, or simply an MLA. He resisted the Emergency with firmness as well. In his post on X, Prime Minister Modi said, “His devotion to our farmer brothers and sisters and his commitment to democracy during the Emergency is inspiring to the entire nation.”

“GREEN REVOLUTION’S FATHER,” Dr. MS Swaminathan

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Dr. MS Swaminathan will receive the Bharat Ratna in honor of his “monumental contributions” to the country in “agriculture and farmers’ welfare.”

“He made exceptional efforts to modernize Indian agriculture and played a crucial role in helping India achieve agricultural self-reliance during difficult times.” We also acknowledge his outstanding contributions as a mentor and innovator who has inspired other students to study and pursue research,” PM Modi said.

The prime minister said that he “valued his insights and inputs” and that he knew Swaminathan personally.

The well-known scientist died away in September of last year. He was instrumental in creating high-yielding rice varieties that allowed farmers in India to increase their production.

In 1987, Swaminathan received the first World Food Prize. Subsequently, he established the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation in Chennai.
