Aaqib Javed, a former Pakistani pacer, is named the men’s team’s new fast bowling coach by Sri Lanka

Aaqib Javed, a former speed bowler for Pakistan, was named the men’s cricket team’s fast bowling coach by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Saturday.

“Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce the appointment of former Pakistan pace bowler Aaqib Javed as the national team’s ‘fast bowling coach,'” the release reads. He will serve as the national team’s coach until the end of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which is slated for June 2024 in the USA and the West Indies.

Aaqib’s position with Sri Lanka Cricket will start immediately. He is now the director of cricket operations and head coach of the Lahore Qalandars of the Pakistan Premier League.

According to Ashley De Silva, CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket, “we warmly welcome Aaqib and believe that his immense international experience, both in playing and coaching, will help our bowlers come into good shape ahead of the upcoming major international competitions, such as the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.”

Playing for Pakistan in 163 one-day internationals (ODIs) and 22 test matches, Aaqib amassed 236 international wickets throughout his illustrious career. Formerly a part of Pakistan’s 1992 World Cup-winning squad, Javed has held several coaching positions for many national teams.

Those positions include coaching the Pakistan national team’s bowling unit, coaching the UAE national team, and acting in a development capacity with the Afghanistan national team.

The UAE National Team qualified for the ICC Men’s 50 Over World Cup in 2015, won ODI and T20I status during his coaching stint, and participated in the 2014 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup qualifiers.

In addition to leading the Pakistan U19 side to victory in the 2004 World Cup, the former speed bowler for Pakistan was also the bowling coach during Pakistan’s victory in the 2009 T20 World Cup in England.
