Before the 2024 T20 World Cup, BCCI and Selectors will meet with Virat Kohli to decide on the future of Twenty20 cricket: Report

With his outstanding batting display, Virat Kohli lit up the ODI World Cup 2023 and finished as the leading run scorer, assisting the Indian side in making it to the finals

Even though Kohli is one of the most decorated batsmen in history across all forms, he is no longer the number-one pick for India’s T20I XI. The talk has rapidly switched from ODIs to T20Is, with the T20 World Cup scheduled for June 2024.

Following the World Cup final, captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Rahul Dravid, and the selection committee under the direction of Ajit Agarkar convened for a five-hour assessment meeting hosted by BCCI.

The BCCI authorities also unveiled a plan for the USA and the West Indies to host the T20 World Cup in 2024.

India will finalize the T20 World Cup team only after six Twenty20 Internationals – three in South Africa and three at home against Afghanistan – are played before the big tournament.

While Kohli’s place in the T20 World Cup team is certain, Rohit and Bumrah are not, according to a report in Dainik Jagran.

Rohit was told by the current selectors and BCCI executives during the meeting that he would be leading the Indian team in the T20 World Cup.

Notably, after India’s loss in the T20 World Cup semifinal in 2022, neither Rohit nor Kohli have played for the T20I squad.

But in the game’s abbreviated version, there is still uncertainty around Kohli’s destiny.

Even though Kohli had the World Cup on lockdown with over 700 runs, he isn’t the number one pick at No. 3 in T20Is right now.

In T20Is, there have also been talks about who may replace Virat Kohli. They want an aggressive cricketer, and Ishan Kishan’s name kept coming up as the top choice for the No. 3 slot.

Over the recently finished home series against Australia, the left-hander produced a few of solid innings while batting at that position.

Rohit will probably be partnered at the top of the order by either Shubman Gill or Yashasvi Jaiswal, with the other being nominated as a backup opener.

The batting depth will be strengthened by players like Suryakumar Yadav, Rinku Singh, Hardik Pandya, and Ravindra Jadeja, even if Kishan isn’t the best choice.

It seems like Kohli will no longer be playing in the Twenty20 Internationals based on these agreements.

But it’s said that Kohli will speak with the selectors and other top board members shortly about his intentions for the Twenty20 Internationals.

Along with Rohit and Jasprit Bumrah, Kohli is not included in the white-ball portion of the South Africa trip; however, all three players will be back for the two-match Test series.
