Iga Swiatek Eases Into the Bad Homburg Open Quarterfinals with a Tweener on the Grass

Iga Swiatek easily defeated Jil Teichmann on Wednesday in a Wimbledon warm-up match, winning 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Bad Homburg Open.

In the opening set of the grass-court competition, the French Open winner converted her first break point with a tweener to lead 3-2, and she went on to win the match in one hour and 19 minutes.

In her first service game, Swiatek fended off three break points, and she didn’t come up against another until the match’s very last service game. Against the Swiss player who was ranked 129th, she faced five break points and saved all five of them while converting on four of her chances.

Swiatek, who is trained by fellow Pole Tomasz Wiktorowski, said that switching from his clay-court technique to a more grass-court one is becoming simpler every year. “I believe it will come with time. I have a coach who is skilled in developing players who excel on grass courts, like Aga Radwaska, therefore I have high hopes for my future on grass.

Swiatek will next face Russian Anna Blinkova, who won her most recent second-round match 7-5, 6-2 against 20-year-old Canadian Leylah Fernandez.

Earlier, Katerina Siniakova advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time since recovering from a wrist injury that sidelined her for two months after the Miami Open on March 21. She defeated Evgeniya Rodina 6-2, 6-4.

The second-seeded Liudmila Samsonova is Siniakova’s opponent next.

In her maiden grass quarterfinal, Lucia Bronzetti came from behind to defeat fourth-seeded Egyptian Mayar Sherif 1-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3. Varvara Gracheva of France will be the next opponent for the 65th-ranked Italian.
