India University Games at Khelo: LPU wins the first runner-up award overall

At the Khelo India University Games (KIUG)-2023, which were recently conducted in Assam, Lovely Professional University (LPU) won the overall first runner-up trophy. The LPU contingent took home 42 medals from nine sports disciplines, including 20 gold, 14 silver, and 8 bronze, in addition to the overall archery championship trophy.

From February 19 to 29, the fourth edition of the country’s 11-day multisport competition took place in India’s seven northeastern states. It was carried out by the Khelo India project of the Indian government, which supports and fosters sports at the local level. The games were opened in Guwahati by Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Anurag Singh Thakur, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke at the event.

Dr. Ashok Kumar Mittal, Chancellor of LPU, commended all of the athletes and the talented students who served as their mentors for bringing honors to the institution. Dr. Mittal gave them even more motivation to excel in all upcoming national and international events.

The LPU sportsmen and women took home nine medals: four gold, four silver, and one bronze in archery; eight gold, one silver, and two bronze in judo; two gold, one silver, and three bronze in boxing; six gold, one silver, and three bronze in wrestling; five gold, one silver, and one silver in athletics; three gold, one silver, and one bronze in weightlifting; two gold in shooting; two silver in fencing; and one silver in yogasana. In the standings, GNDU Amritsar came in third.

The LPU archers were victorious in the men’s and women’s recurve and compound events, taking home the overall archery championship trophy. They all had the best archery abilities. Additionally, LPU athletes placed second in the weightlifting competition and second in the wrestling and athletics competitions.
