Is head coach Janneke Schopman of the Indian women’s hockey team out of a job after her outburst?

Chief coach Janneke Schopman of the Indian women’s hockey team will not likely be given a contract renewal when it expires in July due to her squad’s inability to achieve success, including qualifying for the Olympics in Paris.

Following the quadrennial event, Schopman, who served as the analytical coach for the Tokyo Olympics, assumed leadership following Sjoerd Marijne’s resignation.

“Until the Olympics in July or August, her contract expires. I can’t say anything right now, so let’s wait and watch,” a Hockey India insider said.

However, it has been discovered that Schopman is not likely to get a longer one. India placed third in the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games under Schopman’s leadership.

Bholanath Singh, the secretary general of HI, and Schopman’s relationship deteriorated when the squad was not selected for the Paris Games. After her public outburst during India’s most recent FIH Pro League home game against the USA, things got worse. Schopman said that several members of the national federation didn’t appreciate her.

The gold medalist from the Olympics, Schopman, also expressed her frustration with the women’s team’s treatment in comparison to the men’s squad, saying she felt “alone a lot in the last two years.”

However, Hockey India vehemently refuted the accusations, asserting that she received everything she requested.

“I’m not sure why she is saying stuff like this. Hockey India is a discrimination-free environment. We handle the men’s and women’s teams in the same manner,” the HI source said. “She has not received unjust treatment from Hockey India or the Indian Sports Authority.” We have always respected and acknowledged her appropriately.

The Pro League’s May European leg is Schopman’s next job.
