Pakistan intends to hire international backroom personnel for the 2024 T20 World Cup

In preparation for the forthcoming T20 World Cup 2024, which will take place in June, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is seeking to hire overseas coaches and support personnel. Following the ODI World Cup, Pakistan cricket is undergoing a number of adjustments. Following the event, their captain resigned from all three forms in addition to the backroom staff.

The Pakistan Board is now seeking to hire international coaches and support personnel for the T20 World Cup, according to a PTI report. According to a PCB board source cited by PTI, “The new Chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, is keen to look at the available coaching options for Pakistan and is more inclined to appoint foreign coaches and support staff.”

Following the team’s dismal travels to Australia and New Zealand, where they won just one of the eight games—including a 3-0 thumping of Australia—the PCB recently fired Mohammad Hafeez as director of cricket. During these two trips, he led the squad as head coach as well.

Chief selector Wahab Riaz has been requested by PCB chairman Naqvi to discuss some of the opportunities for joining the PCB backroom staff. “Naqvi has already asked chief selector, Wahab Riaz to speak to some of the available options and shortlist candidates as he is aware foreign coaches might be reluctant to join the Pakistan team because of the way Mickey Arthur, Grant Bradburn and Andrew Puttick were removed from their positions after the World Cup and their contracts cut short,” said a source.

Given that Hafeez appointed instructors Umar Gul and Saeed Ajmal, this implies that their futures are also in jeopardy.

Naqvi isn’t persuaded by Shaheen captaining the T20 World Cup squad.
Notably, the source also said that Shaheen Afridi captaining the Men in Green in the 2024 T20 World Cup does not persuade Naqvi. “Shaheen’s performance as captain in the Pakistan Super League is under scrutiny no doubt about that,” remarked a source.

According to the source, the Pakistan board and squad may undergo many changes before the end of March. It was said that Wahab and Hafeez had a falling out. Wahab is close to Naqvi, but Hafeez is upset that he did not support extending his director contract.
