PSG’s Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos leave Ligue 1 after a 2-3 loss to Clermont

On Saturday, Kylian Mbappe of Paris Saint-Germain won the French Golden Boot for a record fifth time in a row while Rennes secured a place in the Europa League and Auxerre were demoted.

Mbappe’s goal in a 3-2 defeat to Clermont brought his league total to 29 and equaled him with French great Jean-Pierre Papin and retired Argentine forwards Carlos Bianchi and Delio Onnis for the league’s most goals for the sixth time.

The Champions League group stage for the next season has been secured for the French champions PSG, second-placed Lens, and third-placed Marseille. The lucrative European competition’s third qualifying round has been secured for third-placed Marseille.

With goals from Benjamin Bourigeaud in the first half, Rennes defeated Brest 2-1 to move above of Lille and into fourth place.

After a 1-1 tie with Troyes, Lille secured a berth in the Europa Conference League playoffs. The second-half goals for Lille came from Bafode Diakite and Rony Lopes of Troyes.

Monaco finished sixth after finishing third the previous two seasons but lost out on playing in Europe due to a 2-1 loss to Toulouse. In extra time, Rhys Healey, a replacement for Toulouse, scored the winning goal. After 34 rounds, Monaco led Lille by five points and Rennes by eight points. Monaco, though, lost its way in the final stretch, earning only one point from its last four games.

Philippe Clement, the Monaco coach, said on Canal Plus television that “everybody is disappointed.” “In the previous several weeks, the performance and level were insufficient. In the end, I am aware that the coach is the centre of attention.

Following the home defeat to Clermont, which also served as Lionel Messi’s last game for the team, PSG ended only one point ahead of Lens. Prior to start, Messi received jeers.

After Mbappe’s penalty and a header from the departing Sergio Ramos, PSG had a 2-0 lead. Mbappe raised a jersey with Sergio Rico’s name as a sign of celebration. When a stray horse struck Rico, the PSG backup custodian, in Spain last Sunday, he suffered significant injuries.

Johan Gatien and Mehdi Zeffane scored goals for Clermont to equalise the score before halftime. Grejohn Kyei converted a cross for the game-winning goal in the 63rd minute.

Mbappe said on Canal Plus television, “We absolutely wanted to pay homage to Sergio. “I believe that we are all impacted. It’s an incredibly serious scenario. We thought about it all week. We will pray for him and give him as many good thoughts as we can so that he can leave that circumstance as soon as possible.

Ignatius Ganago, a forward from Cameroon, scored the lone goal in a 1-0 victory against Angers to help erstwhile superpower Nantes remain in the league.

In the league, Nantes ended a 14-game losing skid to move ahead of Auxerre and into 16th place.

Auxerre, Angers, Ajaccio, and Troyes will all be sent to the second level after Lens’ 3-1 victory against them. Due to the league’s reduction from 20 clubs to 18 the next season, four teams are demoted. Before Belgium’s Lois Openda put the game away, Lens midfielder Alexis Claude-Maurice scored twice.

Clement Vidal scored elsewhere as Ajaccio defeated Marseille 1-0.

Alexandre Lacazette, a striker for Lyon who finished second in goals scored with 27, was unable to score in a 3-1 defeat to Nice.

Being close to Kylian is flattering, Lacazette said. I’m happy for him and his season. And I’m glad because not many people believed I could pull it off when I got back to Lyon.

Reims lost against Montpellier 3-1. Folarin Balogun, a striker for Reims, added a consolation goal to bring his season total to 21 goals. Born in New York, Balogun first represented England at the youth level until deciding to switch to the United States in May.

Lorient defeated Strasbourg 2-1 as well.
