UEFA has suspended Jose Mourinho from four European matches for verbally abusing the referee

Following Roma’s defeat to Sevilla in the Europa League final on Wednesday, José Mourinho was given a four-match suspension by UEFA for verbally insulting the match official in the stadium garage.

Following the May 31 final, video emerged showing Roma’s coach approaching English referee Anthony Taylor in the garage and used the profanity “disgrace” to describe him.

After being found guilty of “directing abusive language at a match official,” Mourinho will begin serving the suspension in the Europa League group stage in September, according to a statement released by UEFA after the disciplinary panel’s decision.

The punishment exceeds the minimum two-game suspension mandated by UEFA disciplinary guidelines by two games.

Taylor and his family were accosted by Roma supporters at the Budapest airport the day after the championship game.

Roma was also assessed a $55,000 punishment by UEFA and will not be allowed to sell tickets for its next away Europa League game. Infractions included “lighting of fireworks, throwing of objects, acts of damage, and crowd disturbances,” according to UEFA.

In order to resolve the harm that its supporters at Puskas Arena created, Roma must also speak with the Hungarian football federation.

For supporter unrest and stadium management difficulties during the first leg of the semifinal matchup against Bayer Leverkusen, Roma was also fined an additional 80,500 euros.

When Roma played their first home Europa League match in September, UEFA ordered two sections of the Stadio Olimpico, comprising 6,000 seats, to be closed.

Fiorentina captain Cristiano Biraghi was slashed and injured by a projectile thrown from the West Ham supporters’ section of the stadium in Prague during the Europa Conference League final on June 7. He was also left with a bloody head.

UEFA penalised West Ham 50,000 euros and forbade them from selling tickets to spectators for its first away Europa League group stage game the following year. A two-year probationary term was added to a second game suspension.

West Ham was also penalised an additional 8,000 euros for a pitch invasion by supporters in Prague.

UEFA fined Fiorentina for crowd unrest during the semifinal second leg in Basel.

The team is not permitted to sell tickets for its next away match in any European tournament after receiving a 30,000 euro sanction from UEFA.

Only if Juventus is suspended by UEFA after an inquiry into fraudulent accounting would Fiorentina be eligible to compete in the Europa Conference League the following season. They finished seventh in Serie A. Within the following two weeks, the judgement is expected.
