WPL2024: Delhi Capitals defeat RCB by a run to advance to the playoffs despite Ghosh’s futile attempt

In the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024, Delhi Capitals defeated Royal Challenger Bangalore by one run on Sunday, securing their spot in the Playoffs. Richa Ghosh of Royal Challenger Bangalore was run out for 51 after fighting a lone struggle.

Following the decision to bat first, Delhi Capitals amassed a respectable total of 181/5, primarily thanks to 36-ball 58 from Jemimah Rodrigues and 48 off 32 balls from Alice Capsey. In the twelfth over, RCB reached 93/3, largely due to a 32-ball 49 from Ellyse Perry, who was also run out just short of a half-century.

Before the Royals lost a few wickets, Sophie Devine was out as well, having scored 26 off 16 balls. With 17 required off six balls in the last over, Ghosh fought valiantly to keep Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at bay.

On the first ball, Richa Ghosh hit Jess Jonassen for a six. Disha Kasat risked herself to take a second run and give Richa Ghosh the strike, but a dot-ball later, she was run out. The all-rounder reached her fifty runs after hitting a massive six off the following ball after scoring two runs off the fourth.

Ghosh missed his opportunity to connect and sliced the ball straight to the backward point, where Shafali Verma collected it and tossed it to Jonassen, causing her to push the stumps aside as Ghosh was short of the wicket. Two runs were required off the final delivery.

Smriti Mandhana was out for five early for RCB when Capsey trapped him LBW. Sophie Molineux (33, 30b, 5×4) and Ellyse Perry (49 off 32 ball, 7Ï4, 1×6) are the other openers.

Prior to this, Alice Capsey provided excellent support as Jemimah Rodrigues achieved an incredible half-century off 0ff 26 balls, hitting eight boundaries and scoring fifty runs for the third wicket off 31 balls, helping the Delhi Capitals reach a manageable total. For RCB, Shreyanka Patil had four wickets for 26 runs.
