Many injured after “baraatis” attack Sultanpur commuters and traders

Police said they were considering taking legal action against a wedding procession, or “bara,” for injuring many persons and creating a commotion in the Sultanpur area on Thursday night. This week, the state has received reports of two such incidents.

In addition to fighting with a motorcycle rider, the “baraatis” also targeted roadside sellers. The event occurred at the Kadipur police station boundaries at the Surapur Intersection in the district, resulting in at least seven persons suffering serious injuries.

According to police officers, they were in the process of registering an FIR and would soon face legal action.

Following a minor collision, a group of “baraatis” got into a fight with a motorbike at 9 p.m., according to Inspector in-charge (Kadipur), Ashok Singh. Some neighborhood traders intervened to defend the motorcycle, turning the little altercation into a mass altercation. Singh said, “The ‘baraatis’ beat the vendors black and blue with rods and canes.”

Seven people—named Anjani Barnawal, Sunil Chaurasiya, Shivam Barnawal, Ramesh Chaurasiya, Akhilesh Jaiswal, Subhash Tiwari, and Rajkumar Modanwal—suffered head injuries, according to Singh, who claimed a complaint against the baraatis was filed on Friday night.

The participants in Tuesday night’s wedding procession were scheduled for celebration and dancing in the middle of the road, which created traffic jams in the Barabanki region.

Under Indian Penal Code Sections 188 (illegal public gathering), 268 (causing public nuisance), and 342 (wrongful restraint by obstructing a road), as well as Section 7 of the Criminal Law Amendment Act and Section 15 of the Environment Protection Act (inconveniencing public by playing loud music and bursting crackers late at night), the police booked the entire “bara,” the owner and manager of the wedding venue, and those who burst crackers on the road.
