Report on the 1980 Moradabad Riots that was presented to the UP Assembly exonerates the BJP and RSS while holding the Muslim League leader accountable

The BJP and RSS have been fully defended by a judicial panel report about the 1980 Moradabad riots that was handed to the Uttar Pradesh Assembly on Tuesday, 40 years after the events.

In the state assembly yesterday, the 496-page report was presented in the presence of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna, who also provided an explanation for the delay.

The Justice M. P. Saxena Commission’s findings would be presented to the assembly, according to a state cabinet decision made in May.

The whole report

The judicial panel report exonerates the BJP and RSS of all accusations while holding a Muslim League leader and his followers responsible for the 1980 riots that left 83 people dead and many more wounded.

After carefully examining the evidence, the report named Muslim League Leader Dr. Shamim Ahmed Khan and his allies.

The report claims that on the day of Eid, police personnel used the greatest caution and only opened fire at the Eidgah when the lives of those who were inside were in danger.

The shot was solely fired in self-defense. Despite this, it claimed that the rioters stirred up enthusiasm.

The study also made it clear that neither Harijans (Dalits) nor any other Hindu organization staged any covert meetings in order to inspire Harijans to seek retribution against Muslims. In reality, it said, neither the RSS nor the Bharatiya Janata Party were involved in any way.

The panel has, however, made it clear that not all Muslims were involved in planning the disturbances.

According to the findings, the stampede in Idkhana, Bhura Chauraha, and Barfkhana (localities) was the primary cause of the majority of fatalities, which police personnel cannot be held liable for.

Communal violence had resulted from a quarrel that had occurred during Eid prayers at Moradabad Eidgah.

The panel also recommended strategies for riot management in its report, stating that during disturbances, accurate information should be broadcast through loudspeakers to debunk rumors.

In charge of the UP at the time of the 1980 riots was Chief Minister Vishwanath Pratap Singh, who led the Congress party. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi presided at the time.
