Need To Live On The Moon? By 2040, NASA intends to construct homes on the surface of the moon

The American Space Agency, NASA, will soon construct residences on the Moon as a crucial step toward making the lunar surface livable for both astronauts and ordinary people. NASA predicts that by 2040, Americans will have their own neighborhood in space, according to a New York Times story. The NY Times quoted seven NASA experts who said that assuming the organization can maintain its performance standards, a 2040 objective for lunar constructions is doable. Despite some concerns over the ‘overly ambitious’ project of the American Space Agency.

In order to complete this mission, the space agency will launch a 3-D printer to the moon. There, it will use lunar dust, rock chips, and mineral fragments to create a special type of concrete that will be used to build structures on the moon. When disturbed, this lunar concrete will billow into toxic clouds.

We are in the midst of a turning point, which in some ways resembles a dream sequence. In some respects, it seems as if humans were destined to be here, according to Niki Werkheiser, NASA’s director of technological maturation.

The space agency is depending on cutting-edge technology and collaborations with academic institutions and commercial businesses to make this concrete. “We’ve got all the right people together at the right time with a common goal, which is why I think we’ll get there,” Werkheiser said.

“Everyone is ready to take this step together, so if we get our core capabilities developed, there’s no reason it’s not possible,” she said.

In order to achieve its 2040 objective, NASA has teamed with Austin, Texas-based ICON, a building technology business. A space-based building system that can be used beyond Earth to print anything from rocket landing pads to dwellings, all with concrete mixed on-site, was revealed by ICON in 2022 after receiving first funding from NASA in 2020. ‘Project Olympus’ is the moniker given to the endeavor.

Before being deployed to the moon in February 2024, the 3D printer is now undergoing testing, according to Fortune. Before beginning this huge effort, NASA had several lunar missions scheduled. The launch of Artemis II, which will transport four human crew members on a 10-day mission along the same course, is slated for November 2024. This flight will be made by the first woman and first Black person in history.

The first of five envisioned lunar missions, Artemis I, launched last November from the Kennedy Space Center with just robots aboard, circled the moon, and then safely landed back on Earth.
