Top American thought leaders and PM Modi discuss India’s development story in New York

The American economist Prof. Paul Romer, the investor and co-founder of the hedge fund Bridgewater Associates, Ray Dalio, and other eminent thinkers were met by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. They had a discussion and he briefed them on his government’s plans for reform to promote economic growth.

President Joe Biden invited Prime Minister Modi to come to the US for the first leg of his first state visit.

India’s digital transformation, including the usage of Aadhar and cutting-edge technologies like Digilocker, was the topic of a conversation between Modi and Prof. Romer. They also spoke about the different urban development efforts India is pursuing.

“Happy to have met Professor @paulmromer, a renowned economist and Nobel laureate. We conducted in-depth discussions about how to use technology to enhance life. Additionally, we discussed ways to make cities more livable and sustainable,” Modi tweeted after the meeting.

The Prime Minister discussed the measures the government has implemented to promote economic development with Dalio, including the decrease in compliances and the decriminalisation of several law requirements.

Dalio was also asked by Modi to invest more money in India.

“I just met my buddy, the eminent writer and investor @RayDalio. urged him to increase his investment in India and also discussed our government’s reform trajectory,” Modi tweeted.

Also meeting Neil de Grasse Tyson, an astronomer, author, and science communicator, Prime Minister Modi discussed the need of instilling a scientific mindset in young people.

According to a press statement from the Ministry of External Affairs, they spoke extensively about India’s tremendous advancements in the space industry and the many space research missions the country is now conducting.

Along with potential for academic and corporate sector cooperation, the Prime Minister and Tyson spoke about India’s recently adopted National Space Policy.

American Buddhist expert, author, and Padma Shri recipient Prof. Robert Thurman phoned Prime Minister Modi.

The Prime Minister and Prof. Thurman discussed how Buddhist principles might serve as a compass for addressing the world’s problems. They also spoke about how Buddhism is connected to India and the country’s attempts to preserve its Buddhist history.

“The exchange with @BobThurman was excellent. I respect his dedication to scholarly inquiry into matters pertaining to Buddhism. After the meeting, Modi tweeted, “I emphasised India’s Buddhist legacy and how Buddhism can assist our world solve many issues.

Distinguished American math statistician, academic, public intellectual, and author Prof. Nicholas Taleb met with Prime Minister Modi as well.

He praised Prof. Taleb for his accomplishments as a public intellectual and for popularising difficult concepts like risk and fragility.

Prime Minister Modi also brought up the increasing start-up ecosystem in India and the young entrepreneurs’ propensity for taking calculated risks during his chat with Prof. Taleb.
