Delhi’s renaming of the Nehru Museum sparks conflict between the BJP and Congress

The BJP and Congress are at odds once again over the renaming of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library Society in Delhi to Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library Society.

According to an NDTV article, the renaming of the museum at Teen Murti Bhavan comes about a year after the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya was established on the grounds of the same structure, which had previously served as Jawaharlal Nehru’s official residence in India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party, according to Congressmen Mallikarjun Kharge and Jairam Ramesh, are allegedly attempting to downplay the accomplishments made by the nation’s first Prime Minister.

“Those without any history have gone to destroy other people’s histories. The misguided effort to rename the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library cannot diminish Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s legacy as the creator of modern India and courageous defender of democracy, Kharge said on Twitter.

In reference to Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the ideological forebear of the BJP, he added, “This only demonstrates the low mentality and dictatorial attitude of BJP-RSS.”

Ramesh made fun of Prime Minister Modi’s portrayal as the “Vishwaguru”. What won’t Mr. Modi do to misrepresent, denigrate, and undermine the reputation and legacy of the man who founded the Indian nation-state? The self-styled Vishwaguru is a little, small guy weighed down by his inadequacies,” Ramesh said.

The BJP has urged the Congress to refrain from politicking the issue and backed the museum’s name change.

The assault by the Congress was described as “a classic example of political indigestion” by BJP head JP Nadda.

“…the refusal to acknowledge the obvious truth that our country has been created and served by leaders from dynasties other than one. Congress lacks the vision to see that PM Sangrahalaya is a project that goes beyond politics, Nadda tweeted.

In reference to the Gandhis, BJP MP Neeraj Shekhar said that the Congress has never looked beyond one family.

“My dad, former prime minister Chandra Shekhar Ji, constantly strived for the sake of the country. Even though he collaborated with Congress, they only ever considered one dynasty. Congress is now concerned because PM Narendra Modi acknowledged prime ministers from different political parties. Terrible attitude,” tweeted Neeraj Shekhar.

The BJP said that the Congress had no qualms about insulting even its own former Prime Ministers. The efforts and accomplishments of Jawaharlal Nehru and his successors have been highlighted in a much better manner with the use of technology, according to BJP national spokesman Sudhanshu Trivedi, who said that the Congress is making accusations despite the fact that its leaders have not yet visited the museum.

The decision to alter the name was made during a meeting presided over by Rajnath Singh, the vice president of the organisation and the minister of culture, the Culture Ministry said today.
