Australians Predominate on the ICC Women’s ODI Team for 2023; No Indians in the XI

Five Australians were selected for the 2023 Women’s ODI Team by the International Cricket Council (ICC). There was not a single player from India on the squad announced by the international cricket body on Tuesday.

The team’s captain is veteran batsman Chamari Athapaththu of Sri Lanka, who has shown remarkable prowess throughout the ODI format this year. After a rough start to the chase, she produced a magnificent unbroken 140 off only 80 balls in the series finale against New Zealand, setting a record and inspiring her side to win. She also helped Sri Lanka defeat Bangladesh 1-0 in the series.

In relation to Australia, players such as Ash Gardner, Phoebe Litchfield, Ellyse Perry, Beth Mooney, and Annabel Sutherland have been named to the team of the year.

Litchfield scored consecutive half-centuries to start her ODI career, but she saved her best for the end of the year, when she made history on her first trip to India. The teenage phenom won Player of the Match in four of the fourteen One-Day Internationals (ODIs) that she participated in this year.

Perry, an experienced player, scored 185 runs in three ODI innings, including two fifties and another score in the forties, to rank as Australia’s top run scorer during the Women’s Ashes in England. She was a major contributor to Australia’s dominance in the three-match series in India, scoring half-centuries in the first two games.

Mooney scored 439 runs at a pace over 60. The left-hander scored 57* and 133 in his Player of the Series heroics against Pakistan to start the year. She was the wicketkeeper for four One-Day Internationals throughout the year and will be the wicketkeeper for the 2023 ICC Women’s One-Day International Team.

Sutherland’s inclusion in the team was based on her clutch ball wickets and a few lower-order runs. Although Australia’s victory against England by three runs was largely due to her 47-ball 50 at No. 7 in Southampton, her best innings of the year came as the opener. She had taken 13 wickets in as many games with the ball, bowling at a pace of less than five runs per over. Her greatest performance came against the Windies in Melbourne at the beginning of the year, when she took 3-6 in five overs in a match that was impacted by rain.

Ash Gardner was the top wicket-taker in women’s ODIs in 2023 with 24 wickets in 13 matches. She didn’t make a lot of runs at bat during the year, but her greatest performance came in an ODI against England in Southampton, when she played quite well all around.

The other players on the ICC Women’s ODI Team of the Year are Amelia Kerr (New Zealand), Nat Sciver-Brunt (England), Nadine de Klerk (South Africa), Lea Tahuhu (New Zealand), and Nahida Akter (Bangladesh).
