Premier League: Bayern Munich Overcoming a deficit to defeat Borussia Moenchengladbach

At Borussia Moenchengladbach on Saturday, a goal from French youngster Mathys Tel with three minutes left gave Bayern Munich a 2-1 victory.

With the win, Bayern now shares first place in the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen on nine points.

Kou Itakura’s first-half goal gave Gladbach hope of breaking their previous losing streak against Bayern, but Leroy Sane’s goal halfway through the second half ended that.

With time running down, Joshua Kimmich of Bayern curled in a corner, and Tel was left unattended while Gladbach’s defense was concentrating on Harry Kane.

Tel sprinted in, enthralling the visiting supporters and securing three points for them.

Thomas Tuchel, the manager of Bayern Munich, told Sky that his team’s “second half was maybe the best we’ve played this year” and that “we absolutely deserved to win. We maintained our composure and shown our vigor.

Despite Bayern winning the previous 11 Bundesliga championships, Gladbach has evolved into the team that Bayern fears the most over the last ten years.

Bayern had lost six of their previous seven games against Gladbach, including a 5-0 German Cup thrashing in 2021 that was their heaviest defeat since the 1970s.

Despite having seven goals in their first two league games, Gladbach’s marking of striker Kane limited Bayern to few early opportunities.

After 30 minutes, the home team scored when Itakura headed in a corner rebound to give his team the lead.

When the goal went in, Bayern veteran Thomas Mueller reportedly thought, “Oh no, not again, I’m in the wrong movie,” according to a statement to Sky after the game.

Five minutes before halftime, Sane gained space and appeared the most probable after Kane had Gladbach’s attention. He rattled the crossbar.

After turning after receiving a Kimmich pass, the former Manchester City winger ultimately put his team ahead in the second half. He used the studs of his foot to slide the ball into the net.

The 18-year-old Tel scored six minutes after coming off the bench to give Bayern the three points.

Darmstadt is defeated 5-1 by Bayer Leverkusen.

Nigerian striker Victor Boniface helped Bayer Leverkusen defeat promoted Darmstadt 5-1 with a goal in each half.

Boniface, 22, who transferred from Union Saint-Gilloise of Belgium in the summer, scored the game’s first goal with a brilliant solo effort that included cutting past the Darmstadt defense and then chipping the goalie.

This season, Darmstadt has played two games in the first tier and has yet to earn a point. Oscar Vilhelmsson quickly equalized for Darmstadt by tapping in from close range.

Exequiel Palacios, the World Cup champion for Argentina, scored right away after the break. His shot had two fortuitous deflections on route to the goal.

After that, Leverkusen ended the game with two goals in six minutes from Germany’s Jonas Hofmann, who had formerly played for Borussia Moenchengladbach, and another from Boniface.

The decisive win was completed by a late goal by Adam Hlozek, continuing Leverkusen’s incredible run under manager Xabi Alonso since he joined over in October 2022.

Alonso declared the win to be “important for the team, for Boniface, for Jonas, and also for me” after the game.

“We want to build on that, but we also want to stay focused.”

After the international break, Leverkusen will play at Bayern.

Stuttgart maintained their strong home record to start the season, defeating Freiburg by the same score of 5-0 as they defeated Bochum in the season opener.

A late goal from Enzo Millot and two doubles from Chris Fuehrich and Serhou Guirassy helped Stuttgart bounce back from Leipzig’s 5-1 thumping the week before.

Guirassy has scored five goals in three games for a team that, last season, needed to defeat second-division Hamburg in a two-legged playoff to escape relegation.

Werder Bremen defeated a helpless and scoreless Mainz at home with four goals, putting the loss of ace scorer Niclas Fuellkrug behind them.

Bremen, who had gone two games without scoring, earned their first points of the year with goals from four different players.

After visiting striker Tiago Tomas gave Wolfsburg the lead, Hoffenheim rallied to defeat them 3-1 at home with to goals from John Brooks, Maximilian Beier, and Robert Skov.

In central Bavaria, Augsburg twice had the advantage until Bochum’s Takuma Asano scored to pull the teams level at 2-2.
