WB: Truck drivers protest increased penalties for hit-and-run incidents by blocking NH 2 close to Dankuni

The national highway number two near Dankuni toll plaza in West Bengal’s Hooghly district was stopped by hundreds of truck and commercial vehicle drivers on Sunday for around two hours in protest of the new punitive legislation for hit-and-run cases, according to police.

According to the police, they began obstructing traffic near Chanditala at approximately 10.30 am by parking their cars in the middle of the road and setting fire to their tires.

Truck drivers were convinced to remove the roadblock by senior police officials from Dankuni and Chanditala police stations who hurried to the scene.

At 12:50 p.m., police lifted the road barrier, and traffic began to flow, an officer said.

One of the truck drivers demonstrating stated, “We’ve been told the new laws impose a 10-year jail term and a Rs 7 lakh fine for hit-and-run cases.”
