Dipa Karmakar makes it to the World Cup final

Gymnast Dipa Karmakar from India qualified for today’s women’s vault final after placing sixth in the FIG Apparatus World Cup qualifying round in Doha, Qatar, a Paris Olympics qualifying event.

The 30-year-old vaulter earned 12.500 and 13.066 for a total of 12.783 in the vault, improving on his respectable fourth place performance in the Baku Apparatus World Cup in Azerbaijan last month.

“Dipa intends to do better in the end. She has experienced a great deal. We are not worrying too much about qualifying for the Olympics since it is difficult to fight against the best in the world after two ACL injuries, according to Dipa’s longtime coach Bishweshwar Nandi.

Pranati Nayak, the other Indian competitor, placed 11th in the qualifying round and was unable to advance to the final. The Friday final will include the top eight finishers.
