Now, Spot the Robot Dog is capable of opening doors by itself

Spot, the robot dog from Boston Dynamics, now has a lot of additional capabilities. For instance, it can now unlock a variety of doors on its own while on patrol. Spot never fails to astound me as he becomes more sophisticated and independent. Spot, which was unveiled in 2016, has advanced significantly since then. This robot dog can now do significantly more sophisticated optical, thermal, and audio checks thanks to a simple software upgrade. Spot, for instance, allows users to examine and compare temperatures throughout a whole picture and set alerts for material differences between various zones. In contrast, acoustic imaging enables it to recognize changes in sound signatures, which may aid in predicting certain equipment failures.

To increase safety, Spot now has an emergency stop button in addition to an audible (loudspeaker) and visual (lights around the body) signaling system.

In terms of behavior, Spot is now able to change its speed in response to the terrain, whether it be wet or dangerous. If it skids, it may also restore its equilibrium more quickly. It can sense motion, whether it is from nearby machinery or humans, thanks to a LiDAR laser sensor on its back. Then it automatically maintains a safe distance. Finally, a specialized arm has enabled Spot to open doors independently and without human intervention. Up until now, a remote operator was required. Now that it can do the job on its own, it will be more valuable during patrols.

This upgrade will make Spot even more beneficial. Many businesses currently utilize this robot dog to do activities that are often thought to be difficult or even dangerous for humans. Over a thousand of these robots are in use now across 35 nations.

Spot is used, for instance, in the maintenance and monitoring of critical locations like airports, warehouses, power plants, military installations, and so forth. It has the ability to conduct out security checks and identify intrusions while simultaneously transmitting information. Customers include Hyundai, BP, and the RATP, Paris’s public transportation system. Law enforcement organizations may also use Spot to carry out surveillance operations in potentially hazardous areas. Spot is used in certain hospitals to bring supplies, medications, or meals to patients. Finally, Spot is sometimes used to evaluate the hazard of the situation and look for potential survivors in the case of natural catastrophes or industrial mishaps. While NASA expects to be able to deploy it to Mars one day to examine the Red Planet more thoroughly, it also searches the Pompeii ruins for fresh relics.
