On camera: A Chinese man assaulting an African worker sparks a social media debate over racism

On social media, a video showing a Chinese guy allegedly attacking an African person has sparked a flurry of outrage. Dom Lucre posted the video on X, where a commentary claimed that the workers were being treated like “slaves from across the Atlantic.” The video quickly went viral. The Chinese guy can be seen physically abusing the workers with a stick after berating them as they are sitting inside what seems to be a container in the footage. The legitimacy of the film is still unknown, but it has spurred extensive online discussions on racism and slavery.

This is not a single incidence; there have been other reports of comparable incidents. In April of last year, ANI documented cases of Chinese officials mistreating African laborers. The abuse of local workers in Africa was also brought to light by Geneva Daily, which provided information on horrible working conditions, inadequate pay, long hours, and taxing labor.

In a well-known case from 2022, Sun Shujun, a Chinese citizen, was given a 20-year prison sentence by a Rwandan court in Central Africa after a video of him attacking an employee went viral. In addition, a court awarded the victim of a physical attack by a Chinese restaurant boss more than $25,000 in compensation the year before.

After this most recent video was released, it was widely condemned on social media, with many people expressing their disgust and indignation at the behaviors seen. Legal authorities have been called upon to take urgent action in response to concerns raised by prominent voices over racism and modern-day slavery in the 21st century.
