Washington Indian-origin Senator Kamala Harris said that she immediately remembered her mother when former Vice President Joe Biden offered her to be the Vice Presidential candidate from the Democratic Party. 55-year-old Harris, a senator from California, is the first black woman to be elected as a presidential candidate by an important US party. 

His mother Shyamala Gopalan came to India from India for higher studies after completing her graduation in 1957. In several interviews, Harris has stated that he is deeply influenced by his mother. His mother was a famous cancer specialist. In response to a question at an event, Harris said, "I immediately got the respect of my mother that she was watching me and what she must be thinking."
