Nota's Choice (NOTA) has emerged as a major challenge for all political parties. The NOTA (none of the above) option has helped at least five candidates win this time in the Assam Assembly elections. That is , five candidates lost in Assam Assembly Elections 2021 ( Assam Assembly Elections ) because their difference with the winning candidates was much less than the votes cast for NOTA. As per the Election Commission results, the margin of victory in the Najira, Barhampur, Bijni, Dudhoi and Tok constituencies was much less than the vote for NOTA.
In Najira constituency (Nazira), Congress candidate Devavrata Saikia defeated his rival BJP candidate Mayur Borgohin by a margin of 683 votes. In this election, Devavrata Saikia got 52,387 votes, while Mayur got 51,704 and NOTA substitute got 1,470 votes. Similarly, on Barhampur assembly seat (Barhampur), BJP candidate Jitu Goswami defeated Congress candidate Suresh Bora by a margin of 751 votes. The NOTA option received 1,291 votes here.
Bijni and Tekok Constituency
In Bijni constituency (Bijni), BPF candidate Kamal Singh Narjari lost the election by a margin of 1,003 votes, where BJP candidate Ajay Kumar Ray won by 45,733 votes. The NOTA option received 1,388 votes here. In Tekok constituency (Teok), AGP candidate Renupoma Rajkhowa won by a margin of 1,350 votes, where her rival Congress candidate Pallabi Gogoi got 46,205 votes, but 1,927 votes were recorded in the NOTA option.
2,19,578 voters used NOTA
Nota or 'None of the Above' is given as an option to the voters of India. Through the use of NOTA, any voter can choose the 'no vote' option of any candidate contesting the election. According to the Election Commission results, in the 2021 assembly elections, a total of 2,19,578 voters opted for the NOTA option. The ruling BJP returned to power after winning 60 seats, while its allies AGP won nine and UPPL won six seats. The opposition Congress won 29 seats, while its allies AIUDF won 16, BPF four and CPI (M) won one seat.
