Corona Vaccination: Moderna offers to sell booster shots from January, talks continue on demand for compensation
American vaccine maker Moderna has offered to sell booster doses of its Kovid vaccine to India from January 2022. However, the government is in talks with Moderna and Johnson & Johnson on the compensation waiver in the meantime. This conversation currently involves the sale of approximately 200 million doses. These include 50 million doses from Pfizer, 70 million from Johnson & Johnson and 50 million from Moderna.
The talks between the government and the company point towards the supply of vaccines in the future. However, this may impact the budget for India's anti-Covid shots, which is currently estimated at Rs 45,000-50,000 crore. The latest US offering which envisages around 80 million shots for India will also prove helpful if it is delivered soon, as domestic production is expected to increase steadily from August.
Waiting for the first supply of dose to the Ministry of External Affairs
Foreign Ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi said that he is still waiting to see how many vaccines will be donated by the US in the first installment of 25 million. US officials had told that these doses would be Pfizer, Moderna or Johnson & Johnson. India will get more strength in fighting Corona after its supply.
He said that Bharat Biotech had sought emergency use list from WHO for Covaxin. As did the Russian vaccine maker Sputnik. Asked whether Indians who were vaccinated against Covaxin are facing hurdles abroad, the spokesperson said that the ministry is "working to protect the interests of Indians abroad". He is constantly raising this issue with the respective governments.
What is meant by Vaccine Compensation Waiver?
Vaccine compensation waiver means that the company will not have to pay any kind of compensation for the side effects of the vaccine. The Pfizer vaccine may also arrive in the country next month. Pfizer had sought exemption from the Government of India in the rules related to compensation, for which the government has also agreed. Pfizer Company has indicated to provide 50 million vaccines this year.
American company Pfizer had said that it is ready to provide 50 million vaccines in 2021 itself, but it wants relaxation in some conditions, including compensation. Pfizer will be the fourth vaccine in India. Earlier, people of India are being given Kovishield, Covaccine and Sputnik vaccine of Russia.
