Electricity demand decreased in the country due to the knock of the monsoon, 12.5 percent decrease recorded in June

With the onset of monsoon in many states across the country, there has been a decline in the demand for electricity in the month of June. Till Monday, the demand for electricity has seen a decrease of 12.5 percent. Whereas the same demand had reached a record 210 GW till a few days ago. The reason behind this demand was the beginning of industrial activities with increasing heat.

Decrease in demand for coal
Due to hot air and rising temperatures in many parts of the country, the demand for electricity had increased in many states. States had to resort to power cuts due to rising coal demand and lack of timely supply. Due to this, the situation was brought under control, but now the situation is improving after the onset of the monsoon. It has started raining in many states. But hydropower generation is yet to pick up the pace, thereby increasing its share in the power supply basket. For the last 20 days, the hydropower supply has been 45 to 50 crore units.

Southwest monsoon 43 percent above normal
According to meteorologists, the process of monsoon rains is continuing to advance in the central and northern parts of the country. Till June 21, the rainfall deficit in India is just two percent less than the normal till June 21. This happened in the first 15 days of this month. Till the beginning of the month, there was 40 percent less rain than normal. At the onset of the monsoon, there were fears that the Kharif crop could be affected in some parts of the country due to rain. But since the last few days, the rains are making up for the losses very fast and in such a situation, the pace of Kharif sowing can pick up. The main reason for the sluggishness of the monsoon in the last 10 days is the rains in East and Northeast India, which have been 43 percent above normal. The southwest monsoon has been 43 percent above normal.

The pre-monsoon showers have helped in reducing the difference in the total rainfall deficit over the central and north India regions. However, if we look ahead, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that there is a possibility of good rains in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan in the next 24 hours and this will make up for the shortfall in rain. At the same time, there is a possibility of rain and thundershowers in Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh in the next five days.
