A late header by Danny Welbeck gives Brighton a point in their 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace

In a sad outcome for both teams, Brighton & Hove Albion held Crystal Palace to a 1-1 draw on Thursday, with Danny Welbeck heading a spectacular late equalizer to deny the home team their first win at Selhurst Park since September 3.

According to Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi, “I think we lost two points,” to Sky Sports. We made far too many errors, particularly in the first half, which is why. We played with more vigor in the second half in an effort to score.”

With 27 points from 18 games, Brighton—who have only won twice in 12 league games—rose to eighth place in the standings. After an unexpected draw against Manchester City the previous weekend, Roy Hodgson’s Palace are now in 15th place with 18 points.

“As a group, we are a bit disappointed because we wanted to come here and get the three points,” Welbeck said to Sky Sports. “With the manner we’ve played and the results that have eluded us, I think we should be a little higher up the table. Tonight, it took place once again.”

After Jordan Ayew scored shortly before halftime in a dull first half, Brighton goalie Bart Verbruggen hesitated and gave away control, and Palace seemed to be winning. Ayew leaped to head in a precise cross that Michael Olise put into the back post.

However, Brighton hit back with 14 efforts in the second half, and Welbeck, who came in after the break, silenced the Palace fans in the 82nd minute with a magnificent header, his 64th Premier League goal.

Welbeck turned to monitor the ball’s trajectory as he sprang high to shoot it into the top corner with his back to the net.

“I am still making my way back from injury but I felt good and have been feeling good all week,” Welbeck said. “I was just attempting to have an effect. It’s fantastic to score the goal, but I’m sad we didn’t win three points.

“It’s nice to be back on the scoresheet,” he said. “(But) we want to be getting three points more consistently.”

Remarkably, this match finished 1-1 at Selhurst for the seventh time in a row.

When Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson sprang out to swat the ball away, it rebounded over Welbeck’s head and back toward the net, giving the Seagulls a strange chance to score. It almost missed the net as it rolled.

Palace defender Joachim Andersen told Sky, “It’s frustrating, we played a really good first half, I don’t remember them having clear-cut chances.”

“Yet Danny Welbeck scores an incredible goal; that’s simply their caliber. We had a passable game, but in the second half we just wore out.”
