New Delhi: During a phone discussion with his French colleague Emmanuel Macron, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that "Russian athletes should not take part in the Paris Olympics 2024."

Zelensky said on his telegram channel on Tuesday, "I specifically stressed that sportsmen from Russia should have no place in the Olympic Games in Paris."

The International Olympic Committee Executive Board had advised international sports federations and sports event organizers not to invite or permit the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials in international competitions, adding that Russian or Belarusian nationals should only be accepted as neutral athletes or neutral teams, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which was launched in February last year.

Since that time, Russia has not hosted any international competitions. The IOC Executive Board also asked international sports federations and event organizers to make sure that no Russian nor Belarusian athletes nor sports officials are permitted to compete under their nations' flags.

Zelensky called for the entire exclusion of the Russian athletes from international competitions during a phone chat with IOC president Thomas Bach in December of the previous year.
