Delhi and UP police bust a gang distributing phoney medications

Ten people have been arrested as part of the busting of a gang that pretended to be employees of a pharmaceutical business in order to sell counterfeit medications to pharmacies and patients, according to Delhi Police officials with knowledge of the investigation.

According to Prashant Gautam, deputy commissioner of police for the unit, the arrests were made in April and May from various locations in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh after the pharmaceutical business in issue contacted the unit.

The detective said that since the gang began operating in 2017, they had defrauded over 6,300 people out of at least 1.9 crore.

The policeman said that the gang used telemarketers who had access to a database of pharmacies and customers. They would present themselves as representatives of the pharmaceutical firm and offer to sell drugs at steep discounts, according to Gautam.

According to the authorities, the drugs were being marketed to cure conditions including diabetes, high blood pressure, orthopaedic problems, and sexual disorders. The officer said, “The drugs the con artists sold them were actually fake, counterfeit, or spurious.”

After receiving a complaint, the police opened an investigation, conducted searches at three call centres in Delhi and Lucknow, detained 10 people over many days, and seized a sizable quantity of the phoney medications.
